About the Venue

Shows on the Art Wall are intimate, like Shige Sushi itself. The main Art Wall comfortably accommodates eight to 20 two-dimensional pieces, depending on size. There is, in addition, a partition wall (about 3 linear ft.) that accommodates two to four small pieces and a space at the entry that will accommodate one larger piece and two smaller pieces (about 5 linear feet). There is wall space in the spacious bathroom as well, but the focus of shows is on the main wall.

Requirements

1. Open to all Bay-area artists broadly defined (artists primarily active in Mendocino, Lake, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Marin, San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, Contra Costa, or Santa Clara counties.

2. Only two-dimensional work is accepted (three dimensional if flat enough to be wall-hung)

3. All work must be original, hand-made work of the artist. No reproductions. If in doubt, please ask.

4. All exhibited work must be for sale (exceptions may be made for ancillary works included, for example, in a solo show for illustrative purposes).

5. All work must be framed and wired and ready to hang. Wet or unfinished work is not accepted. Framing should be of a quality that reflects well on the work, the venue, and other artists. Unwired frames (frames with sawtooth hangers, built-in hooks, etc.) are generally not acceptable, but exceptions may be made if the work can be securely hung.

6. ALWAYS happy to look at art. Show us your best. Send images or contact the curator to make an appointment to look at art in person. When submitting images digitally, ideally they should be: in the form of jpeg images (up to five images per submission). Files should be 10mb or smaller, if possible. Submit only high-quality, high-resolution images that accurately represent your best work. Images should be at least 1500 pixels on the longest side at 72dpi to show well. Accepted artists will need high-resolution images for publicity purposes, aside from submission images.

7. Required information for all accepted work includes the following (required for creating wall labels).

  • Name of artist

  • Title of work

  • Year of creation

  • Image dimensions and framed dimensions

  • Asking price for framed work

Duration of shows

As a rule, shows hang for eight weeks.

Participation fee

A participation fee of $6/week for the exhibition space applies to accepted work ($6 weekly regardless of the number of pieces an artist has in a show). Thus, the fee for participation in a typical, eight-week show is $48.The participation fee is due when work is accepted for exhibition. The participation fee secures a place in a show. It reflects a commitment by both the artist and the venue. The participation fee is non-refundable after that mutual commitment is made, unless, due to unforseen circumstances, the venue must cancel or postpone a show, in which case the fee is refunded or retained to apply to a show at a later date. The venue may request an in-person viewing of submitted work before final acceptance. The participation fee is due at final acceptance. The fee helps to offset the costs of producing the show. Costs include printing of advertising materials, reception refreshments, and transportation, among others.

Commission

The venue receives 25% of the pre-tax sales price of any work sold. The artist receives 75% of the pre-tax sales price of any work sold. Ideally, sold works will remain in the show until it ends. If a purchaser insists on removing a purchase before the end of a show, artists should be prepared to replace the work with a similar one, subject to approval by the curator. Sales tax is collected on all sales and paid in accordance with state law. As a rule, prices should include the price of the framing; work is to be sold framed. Artists are paid in full at the end of each show.

Insurance

Work is displayed in a typical restaurant setting which entails some risk. A reasonable effort is made to ensure the safety of all consigned work, but insurance against theft or damage, if desired, is the responsibility of the artist. Work is never left unattended during business hours.

Delivery, hanging, and pick-up

Accepted artwork must be delivered and picked up on agreed days. Art not delivered in time for hanging will not appear in the show and the participation fee is forfeited. Unsold work must be removed from the venue on the day following the last day of the show, which will always be a Monday. Work not picked up on time becomes the property of the venue after 14 days, unless prior arrangements are made.

Promotion

Shows are advertised on this website, with flyers, and through an e-mail blast to a select group of artists, collectors, media representatives, and other interested parties. The growing mailing list currently contains more than 400 names. Artists are encouraged to share e-mail addresses with the venue to further enhance the value of the list for future shows and artists. When funds permit, the venue may, in addition, print post cards advertising shows, at its discretion. Other promotion is the responsibility of the artist.

Meet-the-artist reception

Artists are requested to attend one informal gathering during the course of the show to allow interested collectors, friends, family, and fellow artists to meet participants. Dates by mutual agreement, but receptions will generally be the first Monday after the opening of the show.
